As with all social organisations, we have been keeping the situation regarding Coronavirus under review. A number of choir members have been concerned, including the committee, and it was noticeable that numbers had reduced at rehearsal.
I spoke to a doctor at the health centre and described to him the nature of our choir, where we have quite a few elderly members and he said that although the government have not banned gatherings such as ours, (so far!) he felt it would be safer if we were to cancel the current concert run.
We have to bear in mind that Coronavirus is highly contagious and that we sit very close together at rehearsals. As we all know, the medical advice at the moment is that the current pandemic is likely to peak in the UK in May or June, which could have a negative effect on the concert itself.
Another factor to take into account is that we are likely to have even fewer people attending rehearsals as the virus spreads. In order to provide a good concert, we need to have most members practising most weeks.
Taking everything into account, we have decided to cancel the Summer concert this year.
Unfortunately, we can not refund all the subs as some of the money has been spent or committed already. However, we do have a full set of music ready for next Summer and we intend to meet as a committee to look at how we can mitigate the cost of subs in the future.
As soon as we are able, the committee will get together and keep everyone advised of our plans.
